A place where the lake and the sea meet amidst a dense pine forest Hwajinpo Lake is the largest lagoon in Korea, created by a section of the ocean being closed off when two opposing sand spits merged.

This unique formation and the ecosystem that came to live on the sand bar are highly valued. The water in the lagoon was a mix of fresh and saltwater, creating a special environment for aquatic animals of both types to live together.

The lake is in the shape of figure eight, with the southern lake being larger than the northern lake, although the northern lake is still connected with the ocean through a small stream. It was the location site for K-Drama “Autumn in My Heart (2000)” and The K-film “Failan (2001)”

한국에서 가장 큰 ‘석호’는 ‘화진포’ 입니다. 강원도 고성군에 있습니다. ‘석호’ 는 원래 그 자리가 바다의 일부분 이었는데, 파도에 밀려온 모래톱에 의해서 바다와 분리되면서 자연스럽게 형성된 호수를 말합니다.

전문 용어로 설명하면, 석호는 사주나 사취의 발달로 바다와 격리된 호수로서, 지하를 통해서 바닷물이 섞여 드는 일이 많아 염분 농도가 높고, 담수호에 비해 플랑크톤이 풍부하게 형성됩니다.

조류가 운반해온 모래와 암석 쇄설물들이 ‘만’의 입구에 쌓여 만을 바다에서 분리하면 만은 ‘석호’가 됩니다. *사주(砂洲, 영어: shoal)는 파도나 조류, 바람 등에 의해 모래나 자갈이 해안에서 바다로 부리처럼 길게 뻗어나간 사취砂嘴, 모래부리)가 자라서 육지와 육지, 육지와 섬을 연결한 ‘모래톱’을 말합니다. 만(灣)의 입구에 *사주가 생기면 만은 ‘석호’가 되고, 시간이 지나 퇴적물로 메워지면 ‘습지’가 됩니다.
